How to use a condom

Condom facts:

Statistics show that one of the major reasons why a condom fails is because the user puts it on upside down or the condom is damaged while opening the package. Here are some useful facts to keep in mind:

  • There is a right way and a wrong way to wear a condom. If it doesn't unroll smoothly from the rim on the outside, it's upside down.
  • There are basically three sizes - standard, contoured and large (2 mm larger than standard).
  • Only latex condoms provide the best protection against STDs.
  • Condoms have a shelf life - always mentioned on the pack. Make sure you check the expiration date.
  • The worst place to carry a condom is in your back pocket - a shirt pocket or protective case is better.
  • Never open the package with your teeth.
  • Leave room at the tip. If there isn't a "reservoir end", squeeze the tip.
  • Use only water-based lubricants - anything else will damage the latex.
  • If you feel a condom break, stop intercourse, and withdraw immediately.

How to put on a condom

Tear along one side of the foil, removing the condom carefully. Condoms are strong but can be torn by sharp fingernails or jewellery.

Only put the condom on when the penis is erect and before contact with your partner's body, this helps prevent sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

How to Use 1

Hold the condom by the tip and use one hand to squeeze out any trapped air. This will make space for the sperm. Then place it over the end of the penis with the roll on the outside.

How to Use 2

Using the other hand, unroll the condom so it covers the entire erect penis.

If the penis is uncircumcised (has a foreskin), pull the foreskin back before putting on the condom.

Withdraw the penis soon after ejaculation holding the condom firmly in place at the base.

How to Use 3

Wait until the penis is completely withdrawn before removing the condom. Keep the penis and condom from the vagina to avoid any contact with sperm.

After use, immediately throw away used condoms. Wrap it in a tissue and dispose of it hygienically, not down the toilet.
